BP Safety Problems Cited in Fatalities at Texas City Refinery

Law­suits and record fines pun­ish British Petro­le­um for ignor­ing safe­ty prob­lems at its Texas City refin­ery. An explo­sion in 2005 killed 15 and injured hun­dreds. Inves­ti­ga­tors con­clud­ed BP top man­age­ment dis­re­gard­ed safe­ty warn­ings for three years pri­or to the explo­sion. Com­pa­ny exec­u­tives ordered 25 per­cent bud­get cuts in 1999 and 2004 in the face of esca­lat­ing safe­ty warn­ings and three ear­li­er fatal acci­dents at the same refin­ery.
