Toyota Counts on Hybrid Growth While GM Pursues Clean Diesels

Diesel engines and hybrid-electric drive trains improve fuel efficiency. Both add incremental costs to the purchase but become more cost-effective over the lifecycle of a vehicle as fuel prices continue to rise. Toyota expects gasoline-electric hybrid engines to dominate in the US. Meanwhile, General Motors is pursuing a clean diesel strategy in light vehicles.
