Unstable Battery Technology Delaying Toyota Hybrid Advances

A switch in hybrid-electric battery technology from current nickel-metal-hydride to lithium-ion batteries is under development. Instability in the Toyota version of the battery is delaying fielding. This could provide an opportunity for others pushing clean diesel and various hybrid technologies to surpass Toyota’s current lead.

Toyota sold nearly 200K hybrids last year
Lithium-ion batteries would allow hybrids to achieve 60–70 mpg in normal operation
Vs 40–50 mpg Prius gets now
