Automak­ers have been mak­ing progress with hydro­gen fuel cells aid­ed by $1.2 bil­lion in fed­er­al mon­ey over the past five years. Due to the absence of a net­work of fill­ing sta­tions, how­ev­er, automak­ers say they will be unable to scale up pro­duc­tion of fuel-cell vehi­cles to the lev­els need­ed to dri­ve costs down. Only 24 hydro­gen fill­ing sta­tions were oper­at­ing with­in Cal­i­for­nia as of Jan­u­ary.
