Fatalities Rise in Pickup vs Car Crashes

- June 18, 2012

Efforts to reduce the number of deaths in crashes between cars and light trucks have been successful with SUVs but not with pickups, a new federal report shows.  The report, which was quietly released last month, says fatalities in car-truck crashes were down 8% from 2002 to 2010, thanks to a 17% decrease in fatalities in cars hit by SUVs. But crashes with pickups actually led to 5% more car deaths, and there wasn’t any reduction in fatalities for about half of vehicles studied, NHTSA said.
