Marchionne Calls for Unity – Germany Resists

Fiat/Chrysler CEO Ser­gio Mar­chionne is call­ing for a unit­ed effort among Euro­pean automak­ers to cut auto­mo­tive out­put capac­i­ty in the wake of a region­al debt cri­sis. Over­ca­pac­i­ty in West­ern Europe may more than dou­ble, to about 2 mil­lion vehi­cles (2012) as sales fall for the fifth straight year, but Mar­chionne, pres­i­dent of Euro­pean auto lob­by group ACEA, is find­ing resis­tance, espe­cial­ly from Ger­man automak­ers.
